Shane wins silver in national cake competition

Award winning cake decorator, Shane Bennett of Idlewells store Cake Fusion, has won Silver in the 2016 Cake International competition, beating last year's Bronze medal win and lining him up nicely for the 1,2,3 successive and progressive wins in 2017.

The cake, based on the song of one of his favourite band's, Behemoth, took Shane 80 hours to make and was one of 1300 entries across 19 categories of cakes entered into the competition at Birmingham NEC in November last year.

25 year old Shane's competition entries are follow the 'dark side' of cake decoration, with his hobby focussed around his love of music and extreme art. His Facebook page Kult Cakes features a number of his creations and the work of others following the same style of cake making.

At work in Cake Fusion, Shane enjoys creating in the 'softer side' of cake decoration and is renowned for his amazing decoration of celebration cakes featuring Telly Tubbies, Paw Patrol and designer bag cakes.

Although extremely successful in his first 2 years of competition, Shane still see's himself, very much, as a novice. "There are so many aspects of cake decoration that I want to learn and get better at," He said. "including piping, painting and flowers."

Shane credits owner of Cake Fusion, Gilly Swift for much of his knowledge and expertise - and he has taken himself on a number of courses, often travelling to London and Manchester at his own expense.

His next competition will take place in March, and Shane already has an idea of what he will be working on. He is not telling us just yet, but I think we can be sure of one thing; there will not be a fairy or flower in sight!
